ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico’s Democratic congressional delegation is pushing for a new federal facility to bridge the gap between applied research and product development.
U.S. Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and U.S. Reps. Steve Pearce, Ben Ray Luján and Michelle Lujan Grisham Wednesday wrote Defense Chuck Secretary Chuck Hagel underlining their strong support for the department’s initiative to create a network of manufacturing innovation institutes across the country.
They also asked that the next institute be focused on optics and photonics technologies, which are used in robotics, medical imaging, next-generation displays, defense, biometric security and many other fields.
In March, the delegation and members of public private partnerships indicated that New Mexico’s extensive expertise makes it a natural location for additional national investment in research and manufacturing of optics and photonics technologies
