RENO, Nev. (AP) - A Reno liquor and convenience store owner has been sentenced to nine years in prison for his conviction on 16 counts involving the sale of synthetic drugs known as “spice.”

U.S. District Judge Robert Jones sentenced 34-year-old Iqbal Singh-Sidhu. He faced up to 20 years in prison.

Authorities say the spice he sold was labeled as “Diablo,” ”Hayze,” ”White Rhino” and “Smokin Dragon.” The synthetic drugs have hallucinogenic effects on the central nervous system that are more dramatic than marijuana.

Singh-Sidhu was arrested in March 2012 after officers searched his home and business, Grab n Go Food n Liquors, on West Fourth Street.

Prosecutors charged that he maintained the business as an outlet to distribute the drugs.

U.S. Attorney Dan Bogden says it’s the first such prosecution in Nevada.
