BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - An upstate New York community college has received a $10 million donation from the estate of an IBM retiree who never attended college.

Officials at the State University of New York’s Broome Community College announced the gift Wednesday from the estate of Emil Calice (kuh-LEES’) of Binghamton. The World War II veteran and 47-year employee of IBM in neighboring Endicott died in February at age 89.

Calice had family members who attended SUNY Broome, but relatives aren’t certain why he chose the local community college for the gift.

Relatives say he lived frugally, held IBM stock and invested wisely.

It’s the largest donation in the history of SUNY Broome, located just north of Binghamton. The funds will be used to provide more than 100 full, need-based scholarships to students annually.
