BERLCOURT, N.D. (AP) - Horse racing is back at the Chippewa Downs in Belcourt.

The Minot Daily News ( ) reports races began Saturday and will run each weekend through July 6.

Horses will be competing for purses of about $2,000. Some high stakes races will have purses of up to $8,000.

Chippewa Downs features a half-mile oval with a 350-yard straight-away. The newspaper reports that thoroughbreds will run races of four to eight furlongs, the latter a distance of one mile.

Doug DeMontigny is the chairman of the Turtle Mountain Outdoor Recreation Development Association. He says horses in the field are from across the U.S. and Canada.
