ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) - A lawyer says the former mayor of Escanaba is very remorseful over allegations that he embezzled more than $100,000 from the local Eagles Club.

Jayne Mackowiak won’t specifically say that Leo Evans plans to plead guilty in the Upper Peninsula’s Delta County. But she tells The Associated Press that he wants to put the case on a “fast track” and hopes to resolve it without a trial.

The 58-year-old Evans was arrested Monday and released on bond. He resigned from the Escanaba City Council in April.

During his 18 years on the council, Evans sometimes served as mayor. Day-to-day decisions in Escanaba are made by a city manager.

The Eagles Club is a fraternal organization that raises money for other groups and community projects in the area.
