COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - The investigation into the Central Coventry Fire District has found no basis for criminal charges.

Rhode Island State Police Superintendent Col. Steven G. O’Donnell and Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin said Thursday that they had finished their investigation.

The financially troubled fire district has been in bankruptcy receivership since October 2012.

The investigation, which began in January 2013, focused on any possible criminal actions that may have led to the receivership and possible bankruptcy of the fire district. Investigators found a significant error in the commercial fire tax assessment, compounded over two years, caused the $1.6 million deficit.
