GREENPORT, N.Y. (AP) - A historic FDNY fireboat needs about $150,000 in restoration before it can be converted into a museum on Long Island.
The 1938 boat, named Fire Fighter, is docked in Greenport, Long Island.
It was purchased by the nonprofit Fireboat Fire Fighter Museum last year. The group’s president, Charlie Ritchie, tells Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1nXktlk ) he’s seeking a state grant to cover 50 to 75 percent of the inspection, repairs and restoration costs.
He’s hopeful that the hull will be in good shape by this time next year.
Greenport is currently in talks with Suffolk County as it seeks to lease the dock from the MTA.
The MTA leases the dock to the county, which subleases it to the village.
The boat is open for free tours on weekends.
