DOVER, Del. (AP) - Organizers of the Firefly Music Festival are expecting 80,000 people to attend this year’s event, more than double the attendance at the inaugural festival three years ago.

This year’s event kicked off Thursday, and most fans were in place by Friday afternoon, when Delaware Gov. Jack Markell welcomed event organizers back to Dover. Markell said he would be checking out various musical acts himself throughout the weekend. This year’s artists include Foo Fighters, Outkast, Arctic Monkeys and Beck.

Festival organizers vowed the event would be back next year, with ticket sales starting next Wednesday. Markell welcomed the news, citing the multimillion-dollar impact the festival has on Delaware’s tourism economy.

State transportation officials said new traffic control strategies have been effective in avoiding the gridlock that marked last year’s opening day.
