GARLAND, Texas (AP) - A man is dead and a suburban Dallas police officer is on paid administrative leave after the officer fatally shot the knife-wielding man outside a supermarket.

A police statement says the incident happened just after 4 p.m. Friday outside a supermarket in Garland. Police received a report of a man with a knife outside the supermarket, and the first officer arriving saw the man near the market’s front entrance.

The police statement says the man charged at the officer with the knife and refused demands that he drop the weapon. The officer, who the police statement says feared for his life, fired several shots, striking the man.

The 30-year-old suspect man was taken to Medical Center of Plano, where he was declared dead. His identity hasn’t been released.
