GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Downtown Grand Rapids is hosting a downhill skateboard race as a part of the 2014 Meijer State Games of Michigan Summer Games.

Saturday’s “Urban Downhill Skateboarding” event is among a number of new additions to the Summer Games’ 2014 lineup.

In addition to expanding the Summer Games’ offerings, organizers envision the event as a celebration of skateboarding and longboarding in western Michigan. They hope to create discussion about the idea of legalizing commuting by skateboard or longboard in Grand Rapids.

The course is a half-mile. Kendall College of Art and Design, which is one of the event’s primary sponsors, will serve as the event hub on race day.

Riders will compete in one of three divisions: beginner, intermediate or pro.
