A Texas day care center is under investigation for allegedly duct taping children to floor mats at nap time, officials said.
Heart2Heart Montessori Academy is being investigated by the Department of Family and Protective Services and Willow Park police after photographs showed a child wrapped in a blanket and bound to a nap mat by duct tape around his legs and chest, Reuters reported. The photos were reportedly taken by a day care staffer who quit.
Ashlea Pena, Heart2Heart's director and co-owner, issued a statement, which did not directly address the duct tape issue.
"The staff and I have the best interest of the children and parents as our highest priority," the statement said, a local NBC affiliate reported. "The school has an exemplary performance history, and will work with childcare licensing authorities and cooperate fully with any investigation."
The station interviewed Lorrie Almquist, who said she removed her 3-year-old son from the center after an owner called her Wednesday to tell her they had restrained the boy during nap time the day before.
Miss Almquist said the woman "proceeded to tell me that my son had not been napping and another little boy had not been napping and so she decided to duct tape them to his nap mat."
"It's hurtful, it's shocking. You never expect something like this to happen to you," she said.
