PERDIDO KEY, Fla. (AP) - Gulf Power Co. is considering modifying light poles after a loggerhead sea turtle was fatally struck by a vehicle.

The nesting turtle died Wednesday on Perdido Key near Pensacola. An initial report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission suggests the turtle was drawn to a light post.

Gulf Power spokesman Jeff Rogers told The Pensacola News Journal (http://on.pnj.com/1qsxZ0w ) the light was a “full cutoff” light designed to limit lateral light emission. But since Wednesday, he says it has been modified even more.

He says Gulf Power crews will survey other light poles in the area to determine if they need to be modified.

Sea turtles use the light of the moon as it reflects on the water as a navigation tool to direct them to the water.
