SYDNEY (AP) - Australian A-League club Newcastle has signed international striker Edson Montano on a one-year loan from Ecuadorean club Barcelona.

Montana will replace a gap left by Australian Adam Taggart, who has signed with English Championship team Fulham.

The 23-year-old Montano, who previously played in Belgium with Gent, has nine goals in 45 games for Barcelona and has also represented Ecuador’s senior national team.

Jets coach Phil Stubbins said Montano has “good technique, he knows where the back of the net is and at his age, he could develop into a very strong player.”
