Vermont trucker held in death of Quebec pedestrian

BEECHER FALLS, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont truck driver detained at the U.S. Canadian border is in custody in Quebec after a hit-and-run crash that killed a 19-year-old pedestrian.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents are being credited with intercepting the tractor trailer driver at the border crossing in Beecher Falls on Tuesday after being alerted by the Quebec Provincial Police.

The Burlington Free Press ( ) reports authorities believe the driver, whose name was not released, might have been unaware he had hit the pedestrian in Saint-Malo, about 15 miles north of the border.

Quebec Provincial Police spokeswoman Christine Coulombe says the victim was found about 4 a.m. Tuesday,

The name of the victim has not been released.

Customs and Border Protection spokesman Sean Smith agents were alerted by Canadian authorities after the crash.
