MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A former Minot State University football player convicted of assaulting a Minot police officer has been sentenced to one year in jail.

A jury in May found Jesse Ili guilty of preventing arrest and assault on a peace officer, along with a drug charge. He faced a maximum penalty of 10 years in custody.

Judge Patrick Weir on Thursday ordered that Ili serve more than two years of probation once he’s released. KXMC-TV reports that Ili will receive credit for 85 days already served.

The incident happened in August after officers responded to a report of suspected drug use in a parked vehicle. Prosecutors say Ili bashed the head of one officer against a pole several times and punched another officer in the head.
