DENVER (AP) - Gov. John Hicknelooper says a law taking effect July 1 that seeks to increase reporting of elder abuse shows that the state will take seriously any allegations of mistreatment.

The government made the comments Friday.

The legislation that was passed last year classifies any person who is 70 or older as an “at-risk” elder, and requires certain health professionals and social workers to report suspected abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation.

Failure to report abuse will be a misdemeanor.

Forty-seven other states have similar laws.

Former Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey called the mistreatment of elders one of the most underreported crimes.
