CHICAGO (AP) - Republican Bruce Rauner (ROW’-nur) says hundreds of thousands of Illinois residents who support legislative term limits should get to vote on the issue this November.

Rauner is trying to unseat Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. He’s also leading the effort to put a question on the ballot to limit legislators to eight years in office.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Mary Mikva said in a Friday ruling the measure doesn’t meet constitutional requirements to make the ballot. She also deemed an initiative to change how Illinois’ political map-drawing process invalid.

An attorney who represents top Democrats filed a lawsuit challenging both measures.

Rauner says he always knew “protectors of the failed status quo” would fight the changes. He says he’s hopeful the Illinois Supreme Court will reverse the ruling.
