PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) - Sporting Kansas City moved to the top of Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference with a 1-0 win at Portland on Friday, with Lawrence Olum scoring the winner.
The win moved Sporting KC above D.C. United on goal difference, thought the Washington club has a game in hand.
In a scrappy and foul-strewn game, Sporting converted one of the few scoring chances in the 24th minute. A long throw-in by Seth Sinovic into the penalty area was knocked by Kevin Ellis into the path of Olum and the Kenyan fired home for his first goal of the season.
In the day’s other game, New York salvaged a 2-2 home draw against Toronto when Bradley Wright-Phillips scored in the third minute of added time for his league-leading 12th goal of the season.
Tim Cahill, a substitute in the 78th minute, set up the dramatic finish by flicking a header from the top of the box to the edge of the 6-yard line and Wright-Phillips’ finish slipped past goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
New York had opened the scoring when Peguy Luyindula headed in a contested ball in the 36th minute off Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo’s cross.
Toronto equalized in the 55th minute on Jermain Defoe’s clever finish at the edge the 6-yard box. It was Defoe’s fifth goal in as many games.
The Canadian club took a 2-1 lead when Gilberto rocketed in a free kick in the 72nd minute.
