Greeley gathers to mourn killed basketball players

- Associated Press - Tuesday, June 3, 2014

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Students and teachers will gather at Greeley Central High School Tuesday evening to remember two recent graduates killed in a car crash.

Eighteen-year-olds Edwardo Hernandez and Matthew Garcia were killed Sunday when a car driven by Hernandez failed to stop at a stop sign and hit another car. Authorities say both teens were wearing seat belts and that neither alcohol, drugs nor speed were factors in the crash.

The accident came just a week after their graduation.

The Greeley Tribune (http://bit.ly/1nJmion) reports that Garcia was honored last week as the best boys basketball player in Weld County during the newspaper's prep sports banquet. Despite being just 5-foot-5, he led the Wildcats with a 16 point scoring average.
