Rep. Matt Salmon said Monday that President Obama “needs to pick up the gosh darn phone” and do something about Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who has been incarcerated in a Mexican prison since April 1.

“Mr. President, get off your duff and do the right thing,” the Arizona Republican said on Fox News’ “On the Record.” “You’ve boldly said you have a pen and a phone — put that phone to good use for once and a while.”

Mr. Tahmooressi, who suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, says he took a wrong turn while heading to dinner in San Ysidro, California, and wound up at a border crossing point in Tijuana with three guns in his truck. He was taken to prison and is being held on weapons charges.

Mr. Salmon said he visited the Marine on Saturday, and he appeared to be in good spirits.

He’s “in good condition,” the congressman said, Fox News reported. “I think his spirits were pretty good. He looked good to me. He was an incredibly courageous and polite and wonderful young man. I was just really taken aback with his demeanor. I have a son about the same age and he reminded me a lot of my son. Just a great guy.

“I was holding my breath for the Obama administration to stand up and do something and with the absence of them doing something, I decided to take the initiative to go to Mexico myself and go into the prison, talk with the officials there,” he continued.

“I have had several conversations with the State Department and then today I spoke again with the Mexican ambassador to the United States in Washington, DC — Ambassador Medina-Mora,” he said. “I am very hopeful [after] my conversation with the Mexican ambassador that they understand how important this is to many of us here in the United States.”
