AVENTURA, Fla. (AP) - Police say a Florida man admitted to a hospital for depression was strangled by another patient.

The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/V4QZrl) quoted police as saying that Raul Alexander Rios was strangled Thursday by a homeless man who had been assigned to the same room in a psychiatric ward at Aventura Hospital.

Relatives of Rios told the newspaper that Rios was admitted to the ward two weeks ago.

Alexander Thadeus Jackson was being held Monday without bond at the Miami-Dade County jail on a charge of first-degree murder. Jail records did not show whether he had an attorney. It wasn’t clear why he had been admitted to the hospital.

The newspaper quoted spokeswoman Kathryn Walton as saying the hospital is conducting an internal review.

According to a police report, Jackson told investigators he strangled Rios with his hands and a bedsheet.
