COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - A graduate of Vermont’s St. Michael’s College could become the next commandant of the Marine Corps.

The Defense Department announced Thursday that President Barack Obama is nominating Gen. Joseph Dunford to lead the corps. Dunford is currently the commander of American and allied forces in Afghanistan.

Dunford, who is a native of Boston, graduated from the Colchester college in 1977. He was commissioned by the Marines later that year.

In 2011 Dunford told a St. Michael’s College publication he planned to serve in the military, but did not intend to make it a career.

From 2010 to 2012 Dunford served as the assistant commandant.
