RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A Rapid City man who fired at officers during an early morning traffic stop was shot and killed.

Authorities say Officer Jerrell Lewellen stopped an all-terrain vehicle early Thursday, and 35-year-old Harold Murphy tried to flee on foot. A second officer tackled Murphy. Police say Murphy began firing a handgun as the two struggled, and Lewellen shot Murphy at least once to stop the struggle.

Murphy died at the scene. No officers were injured.

Police say Murphy has a violent criminal history and had an active warrant for failing to comply with a sentence

Attorney General Marty Jackley says the state Division of Criminal Investigation will look into the shooting and issue a report within about 30 days. That’s standard procedure when a police officer is involved in a shooting.
