HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) - The weather was cold, and the hour was early.

But those who finished a 5K race Saturday morning in Hamtramck were rewarded handsomely.

With paczki (POONCH’-kee) and beer.

The annual Paczki Run took hundreds of participants through the downtown area of the Detroit enclave. The event comes only a few days before the Lenten season, a 40-day period leading up to Easter when many Christians give up indulgences.

Hence the sugary pastries awaiting those who completed the three-plus-mile run.
