SWAC names Texas Southern’s Murray player of year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Texas Southern forward Aaric Murray is the Southwestern Athletic Conference player of the year.

Murray was also named defensive player of the year in voting by SWAC coaches and sports information directors released Monday.

Southern swept the other three awards. Roman Banks is coach of the year, while Tre’Lun Banks claimed freshman honors and Calvin Godfrey was named the top newcomer.

Murray led the SWAC in scoring, averaging 21.7 points and 7.7 rebounds a game. Murray also blocked a league-best 69 shots.

Roman Banks led the Jaguars to a 19-11 record, including 15-2 in SWAC games.

Trelun Banks led Southern in assists and averaged 8.6 points.

Godfrey averaged 12.9 points and 8.8 rebounds.
