NOME, Alaska (AP) - Kelly Maxiner of Willow has scratched from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Officials say in a release that he scratched Monday evening about a mile and a half before reaching the village of Golovin.

He says his team was having difficulty traveling against a crosswind while on the ice. Golovin is between the checkpoints in Elim and White Mountain, near the end of the race.

A local resident took Maxiner and his team to Golovin, where they were to spend the night. They were to be transported to Nome on Tuesday, weather permitting.

Maxiner had his highest finish as a rookie in 2011. This was his fourth race.

So far this year, 16 mushers have scratched and one was withdrawn.
