JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Malik Newman scored a game-high 25 points as Callaway rolled past Vicksburg 49-33 to claim the MHSAA Class 5A boys state championship at the Mississippi Coliseum on Friday night.

Callaway (31-1) clinched its third straight state title and sixth championship overall. The Chargers jumped ahead 16-5 by the end of the first quarter and led 28-20 at halftime.

The 6-foot-3 Newman, a junior shooting guard who is one of the nation’s most highly-regarded recruits for his class, made 7 of 14 shots from the field and all nine of his free throws.

Cortez Mitchell and Dontelius Ross each added eight points for Callaway.

D’Angelo Richardson led Vicksburg with 15 points. The Gators (19-9) are still seeking first state title since 2003.
