BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (AP) - Barbour County’s interim sheriff has been appointed to the position full time.

Media outlets report that the County Commission named Phil Ferguson as sheriff on Saturday during a special meeting.

Ferguson had served as interim sheriff since Feb. 20. He replaces John Hawkins, who resigned in February after pleading guilty to a fraud charge.

Ferguson will serve until the November election.

County Commissioner Tim McDaniel says the commission believes Ferguson was the best candidate to serve until the election.
