LONDON (AP) - British basketball will receive no funding in the run-up to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 after having an appeal rejected by the body that distributes government and lottery cash to Olympics sports.

The withdrawal of funding for synchronised swimming and water polo also remains. Weightlifting had nearly 900,000 pounds ($1.5 million) reinstated.

UK Sport announced in February that it was pulling the 7 million pounds ($11.6 million) it had allocated basketball for the four years up to the Rio Olympics.

Roger Moreland, performance chairman for British Basketball, says the sport has a “grassroots base bigger than any other British Olympic team sport” and that Britain’s “funding system … for elite sport cannot be working to the best of its ability if it can leave sports like basketball behind.”
