A Washington, D.C., nonprofit that helps local women fund their abortions is offering its donors a gruesome little reminder of what their cherished contribution may prevent.

“Donors who sign up to give $10/month or more will receive a DCAF coat hanger necklace as our way to say thank you,” said the donation website for DC Abortion Fund (DCAF). “Visit our online donation page today and in the dedication box, type in ‘Coat Hanger.’ “

The coat hanger is a macabre symbol of the horrifying, and sometimes deadly, lengths some women would go to in order to abort their unwanted children before the procedure was legalized.

National Review Online reported that the coat-hanger pendant had previously been offered to donors in December 2009 as a sort of holiday special.

DCAF said it is “the only organization in the D.C. region that focuses solely on disbursing small patient grants for abortion care in our community.”

Under the frequently asked question, “Why fund abortion?”DCAF answers:

“The cost of a first-trimester abortion can be more than a family on public assistance receives in a month. Many women who work multiple jobs still do not have enough extra money for an abortion. Low-income women and girls often delay their abortions while trying to raise the money they need. Many times, these delays force them into more expensive and complicated second-trimester abortions. Some never get enough money to cover the cost of the procedure.”
