Utah St. Patrick’s Day weekend DUI rate dips

- Associated Press - Wednesday, March 19, 2014

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah police made fewer drunken driving arrests over the weekend leading up to St. Patrick's Day than they did over the same holiday weekend last year.

Utah Highway Patrol said in a statement Tuesday that troopers ramped up efforts to police alcohol-impaired driving over the weekend.

Highway Patrol Troopers arrested 63 drivers for DUIs during that time period this year. They also wrote 43 tickets for other alcohol violations.

UHP says this year's number of arrests is down 15 percent from last year.

Troopers also made over 3,600 traffic stops and investigated 135 crashes, including two deaths.

But Utah did not log any DUI-related fatalities over the weekend.

UHP and other agencies created DUI checkpoints statewide to cut down on drinking and driving.
