DENVER (AP) - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Cory Gardner says he was wrong to support “personhood” measures that would restrict or ban abortion.

Gardner, a congressman representing most of eastern Colorado, told The Denver Post Friday (http://tinyurl.com/keqsvqb ) he changed his mind after learning the proposals could also ban some forms of contraception.

He didn’t say when he reversed himself but said he began examining the issue more closely after the 2010 election, when Colorado voters rejected a personhood amendment to the state constitution by a 3-to-1 ratio.

Gardner is seeking the Senate seat held by Democrat Mark Udall.

Udall’s campaign spokesman, Chris Harris, calls Gardner’s announcement an election year stunt. Harris says that for the past two years, Gardner has co-sponsored a bill in Congress that is similar to the Colorado personhood measure.
