GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Brenau University will soon open its new “Manhattan Gallery” in downtown Gainesville with works from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel collection of modern art.

Brenau said the Vogels are known as the postal worker and librarian who amassed in their modest New York City apartment what art critics have called one of the greatest personal collections of paintings, drawings and sculptures in modern America.

At its peak, the Vogels’ collection included more than 5,000 works, many from some of the most important artists of the 20th century.

Brenau will showcase part of the collection when the new gallery opens March 29 at the recently renovated Brenau Downtown Center on Main Street in Gainesville.
