FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says one of its helicopter crews rescued a man who drove his all-terrain vehicle onto Lake Erie ice, which then broke off from shore.

The Coast Guard says in a statement that it got word about 2:30 a.m. Saturday of a man adrift on an ice floe off Sterling State Park in Monroe County’s Frenchtown Township. The site is near Monroe in southeastern Michigan.

The Coast Guard says its helicopter took off from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit. It says the crew spotted the man and hoisted him aboard the helicopter.

The Coast Guard says plans are underway to salvage the man’s ATV.
