MIAMI (AP) - Sen. Marco Rubio says government regulations should be overhauled to pave the way for new technologies.

The Florida Republican and potential presidential contender is set to discuss his ideas on economic growth Monday at the Washington headquarters of ridesharing service Uber.

The company uses a mobile app that connects passengers to drivers, who are often everyday people seeking extra income by picking up fares.

Uber operates in more than 70 cities around the world, but local regulations prevent the on-demand car service from competing with traditional taxis in Miami and other Florida cities.

Rubio has called such rules antiquated and says government should streamline regulations. Taxi drivers argue that ridesharing companies need more scrutiny because they are avoiding costly requirements commercial drivers are forced to follow.
