The Rays made two moves after Friday’s game. They re-signed left-hander Eric Bedard, who was released this week. Bedard will be in the starting rotation at Triple-A Durham. “It is great to have Bedard back with us,” said Rays manager Joe Madden. “I’m sure he’ll see some time with us this year. I’m surprised no one picked him up. He’s got a lot left.”

The Rays also signed infielder Mike Fontenot to a minor league contract.

Avila’s homer was his first of the spring and Ausmus said that his catcher is a lot better than the one who hit .227 in 102 games last season. “I’m happy Alex Avila is hitting the ball,” Ausmus said. “I think he’s going to have a rebound season. He’s a lot better than his numbers showed last year.” Avila ended the spring with a .306 average.
