Seven months after showing up to training camp and having to fight for a roster spot, Jose Gumbs will enter the 2014 season with slightly more security.
The free safety signed a one-year, $495,000 contract to return to the Washington Redskins on Monday, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Gumbs, 25, played in eight games for the Redskins last season, primarily on special teams, and started one game – the Oct. 27 road loss to the Denver Broncos. He had six tackles on the season and had an interception in the Dec. 15 road loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
An undrafted rookie out of Monmouth in 2012, Gumbs spent parts of that season with the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs before joining the Redskins during the first week of training camp.
The Redskins have now signed five players who were on the roster at the end of the 2013 season and have 17 others set to become free agents when the league year begins on March 11.
