SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Federal authorities say a central South Dakota man has been sentenced to 40 months in prison for an assault conviction.

The U.S. Attorney in Sioux Falls on Thursday announced the sentence of 19-year-old Joseph Anthony Little Star. The Eagle Butte man was also ordered to pay a $250,000 fine and will be on probation for three years following his release from prison.

Little Star pleaded guilty in November to one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Authorities contend Little Star in July beat a man and left him unconscious following an argument at a party celebrating Little Star’s marriage. Authorities say the discussion ensued because the victim believed Little Star was mistreating his new wife.

Authorities say the victim continues to receive medical attention because of his injuries.
