MACON, Ga. (AP) - D.J. Bryant scored 22 points to lead Tift County to a 63-49 win over Wheeler Saturday in the GHSA Class AAAAAA Boys state championship game.
The Blue Devils won their second state championship in school history, outlasting the Wildcats in what started on pace to finish as the GHSA largest-classification’s lowest-scoring championship in 55 years.
Tift County (27-3) led 33-28 entering the fourth quarter. No championship game had fewer than 85 combined points since 1959, but Wheeler (28-5) sent Tift County to the foul line 22 times in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils made 17 and scored 30 points in the fourth quarter after managing only 33 in the first three quarters combined.
Playing in front of his future coach Brian Gregory at Georgia Tech, Tadric Jackson added 17 points for the Blue Devils.
Jaylen Brown scored 17 points to lead Wheeler, which was denied its sixth state championship.
