ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The University of Michigan is seeking a temporary liquor license for Michigan Stadium when it hosts a preseason exhibition game between world soccer powerhouses Manchester United and Real Madrid.

The Ann Arbor News reports (http://bit.ly/QIaRhh ) a bill to allow alcohol sales for the Aug. 2 International Cup Championship in Ann Arbor has passed the state Senate and is awaiting approval from the House.

A similar effort allowed alcohol sales at the Big House for the NHL’s Winter Classic in January. Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon says the NHL sold close to 75,000 cups of beer, generating about $650,000 in revenue at the New Year’s Day game.

The school’s Board of Regents is expected to discuss the latest request at its Thursday meeting in Dearborn.
