BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Lawmakers have approved a special ethics exemption for a former state senator, so he can lobby the Legislature even though his brother is currently in the Senate.

Senators gave final passage to the bill by New Orleans Rep. Jeff Arnold with a 20-8 vote Wednesday, sending it to the governor.

No one named who the bill was designed to help during Senate debate. But Arnold previously said it was for former state Sen. Francis Heitmeier, whose brother, David, is a state senator.

New Orleans Sen. Karen Carter Peterson opposed the measure, saying lawmakers shouldn’t give anyone special treatment.

Sen. David Heitmeier didn’t vote on the measure, and several other senators skipped the vote.
