SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Shane, the crime-fighting police dog, is retiring after eight years with the Gurnee Police Department.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports http://bit.ly/1j3jmKO that the Officer Philip Mazur - the German shepherd’s handler - says his 9-year-old partner is having trouble keeping up with the demands of the job.

Mazur says Shane “earned his keep here.” He will retire as a family pet in Mazur’s home.

Shane was cross-trained in patrol and narcotics duties. He later added cadaver search techniques.

Shane and Mazur have been on body searches, weapons and drugs sweeps, and in 2011, tracked a scent more than a mile to link a wallet to a car burglary suspect captured by another officer.

Police Chief Kevin Woodside says he looks forward to Mazur getting a new canine partner.
