‘My hat’s off to the VA’: Wife of female soldier killed in suicide bombing to receive full benefits

- The Washington Times - Tuesday, May 20, 2014

The gay widow of a female soldier killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan will receive full retroactive benefits for her wife's death.

"My hat's off to the VA," Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Tracy Dice Johnson said of the decision to allocate all the benefits heterosexual widows receive, the Military Times reported Sunday. "It was a long, drawn-out process, but at the end of the day, hearts and minds prevailed."

Her wife, Staff Sgt. Donna Johnson, was killed along with two other soldiers in the Oct. 1, 2012, attack.

As part of the compensation package, Sgt. Johnson will receive $1,233.23 per month, dating back to her wife's death, as part of the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation program, according to the Times.

The couple, which was married Feb. 14, 2012, is thought to be the first same-sex married military couple to have suffered a casualty after the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," the Times reported.
