WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - The man who served as driver and who provided security for poet and author Maya Angelou says she spent her last day in her home proofreading her new book.

W.C. Bryant says Angelou was going over a book on Tuesday that chronicled her years of experiences with national and world leaders.

Bryant said a nurse made her hourly check on Angelou at 5 a.m. Wednesday. He said the nurse said Angelou had been watching television, and the nurse added that she heard her changing the channel.

He said when the nurse went back to check on Angelou around 6 a.m., she had died.

Bryant called Angelou “an angel here on Earth.” He said if you didn’t meet her, “y’all missed an opportunity of a lifetime.”
