ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico’s congressional delegation is part of the chorus of lawmakers calling for Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign.

Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and Reps. Steve Pearce, Ben Ray Lujan and Michelle Lujan Grisham say independent investigators have confirmed that problems within the VA are systemic, and President Barack Obama needs to appoint new leadership that can restore accountability and transparency within the VA system.

They say veterans deserve better.

A probe of operations at the Phoenix VA Health Care System found that about 1,700 veterans in need of care were at risk of being lost or forgotten after being kept off an official waiting list. Problems were also found nationwide.

Udall called for an investigation of New Mexico’s VA after concerns about waiting times and care were raised in Phoenix.
