ATTORNEY GENERAL: RECOZNIZING GAY MARRIAGE WOULD CAUSE STATE HARM

The attorney general of Florida says in court documents that recognizing same sex marriages performed in other states would “impose significant public harm.” Eight gay couples and the American Civil Liberties Union have sued the state in federal court.

KILLER OF 2 OFFICERS SENTENCED TO DEATH

A man convicted of killing two police officers has been sentenced to death. A Hillsborough County judge announced Friday that Dontae Morris should be sentenced to death for killing two Tampa police officers in 2010. Jurors found Morris guilty last year of two counts of first-degree murder. That same panel later recommended unanimously that Morris should face the death penalty.

GAS STATION CLERK KILLED IN PALM BEACH COUNTY

A gas station clerk is dead after an armed robbery in South Florida. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reports that 22-year-old Shihab Mahmud was found dead just after midnight Friday. The shooting occurred at the Chevron Gas Station in Wellington, which is west of West Palm Beach. The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-458-TIPS.

LEGISLATOR’S SON FOUND DEAD

The 26-year-old son of Republican Rep. Dave Hood was found floating in a neighbor’s pool in Ormond Beach on Thursday. Fire and police officials say Clay Hood was already dead when they arrived following a 911 call from the neighbor, who found Hood’s body.

KILLER OF 2 OFFICERS TO BE SENTENCED

A man convicted of killing two police officers is scheduled to be sentenced. A Hillsborough County judge is expected to announce Dontae Morris’ fate Friday. Jurors found Morris guilty last year of two counts of first-degree murder. That same panel later recommended unanimously that Morris should face the death penalty. The judge is not bound by the jury’s recommendation, but he must give it great weight.
