COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina Press is publishing U.S. Rep. James Clyburn’s memoir and hosting a signing event at the Hollings Library on the university campus.

University spokeswoman Peggy Binette says Monday evening’s event in Columbia is free and open to the public.

The memoir is titled, “Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black.”

It details Clyburn’s journey as a civil rights leader from the Jim Crow-era South to the Washington beltway.

Clyburn is a native of Sumter and has represented South Carolina’s sixth district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1993.

He was South Carolina’s first African-American congressman in nearly a century and serves as assistant Democratic leader of the House.
