Missouri lawmakers on Tuesday overrode Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto to enact an income tax cut. Here are excerpts from what supporters and critics of the legislation said.

___

“This is a historic day for Missouri. What we have now is a law that takes a cautious, responsible approach to reducing our income tax burden. This law will provide stimulus for our small employers while protecting education funding.” __ Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and CEO said Dan Mehan.

___

“This legislation is irresponsible policy that will harm Missourians and result in larger class sizes, higher college tuitions, and further deteriorating infrastructure and health and social services. Legislators who voted for SB 509 should be ashamed.” __ Missouri Budget Project Executive Director Amy Blouin.

___

“Despite formidable opposition mounted by Governor Nixon and a bevy of taxpayer funded resources at his disposal, lawmakers listened to their constituents and delivered on this popular legislation. Thanks to their commitment, Missourians will get to keep a little more money in their pockets and businesses will be better positioned to compete. At the same time, this legislation will responsibly control growth and government spending as our economy expands.” __ Grow Missouri Treasurer Aaron Willard.

___

“As we’ve seen in Kansas, risky tax schemes fail to create jobs but lead to drastic cuts in vital services. In the end the burden of the cuts will be borne by students, parents, and our local school districts.” __ Missouri National Education Association President Charles E. Smith.

___

“We’re happy to see the House and Senate take action to help Missouri taxpayers in ways they seldom have before.” __ Associated Industries of Missouri President Ray McCarty.

___

“While it will be applauded by out-of-state ideological extremists and their Missouri counterparts, the override of SB 509’s veto will be devastating to Missouri, and Missourians.” __ The Coalition for Missouri’s Future.

___

“Small-business owners across the state applaud today’s override of the governor’s veto. Allowing small businesses and individuals to keep more of their hard-earned money will drive Missouri’s economy forward and help make the state more competitive in the Midwest.” __ National Federation of Independent Business state Director Brad Jones.
