CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston is dedicating the new home for a replica of the Best Friend of Charleston, the first train in the nation to offer regular passenger service.
Mayor Joe Riley and Norfolk Southern officials are scheduled to attend Friday’s dedication at a downtown museum.
The Best Friend made its first run on Christmas Day, 1830, but was destroyed in a boiler explosion six months later. The replica was created in 1928, marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Co., a predecessor of the Norfolk Southern.
The museum is in the last of a series of 19th Century railroad sheds renovated in recent decades. The first was the Charleston Visitor Center that opened in 1991.
