WOOD RIVER, Neb. (AP) - Volunteer firefighters from Wood River, Cairo and Alda were called this week to a central Nebraska grain dryer fire.

The Grand Island Independent reports (http://bit.ly/1wSzVTa ) that the fire occurred late Thursday night, and firefighters monitored the smoldering corn throughout Friday.

Wood River Fire Chief Todd King says the fire was initially knocked down, but not extinguished. He said the dryer had begun to lean, and officials feared it might collapse and injure firefighters.

Once the sun rose on Friday, firefighters put more water on the dryer and corn and an excavator was brought in to knock down the dryer and the corn spread out a little.
